The NIFCA district's waters support a rich tapestry of marine life, from economically vital shellfish to prized recreational finfish. To make sure these stocks thrive for generations, we actively contribute to the development and delivery of Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) under the Fisheries Act 2020.
National frameworks
Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) are national blueprints developed to secure the long-term health of our marine stocks. They are built through a joint effort between the fishing industry, scientists, and local stakeholders.
As FMPs can introduce vital changes to how specific species are managed, your expertise is essential to the process. By staying informed and contributing your views, you help us deliver proportionate, effective measures that meet our statutory obligations under the Fisheries Act 2020 while protecting North Tyneside and Northumberland’s maritime future.
FMPs relevant to the NIFCA district are published by either the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) or the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate.
Stay compliant
Operating within NIFCA’s district carries a legal responsibility to adhere to established byelaws and permitting requirements. These regulations are statutory tools designed to enforce Fisheries Management Plans and protect the ecological integrity of the region. Whether you are commercial or recreational, ensuring you hold the correct permit is a legal necessity for all fishers.
By securing your permit, you demonstrate your commitment to a lawful and sustainable industry. Failure to comply with these measures undermines the collective effort to preserve our marine heritage and can result in enforcement action.
