Our Role & Powers

NIFCA is a statutory authority with the role to ensure that North Tyneside and Northumberland fisheries' resources are used sustainably. We carefully balance essential environmental protection with the needs of our local commercial and recreational fishers.

Statutory responsibility, delivered locally

We are responsible for managing North Tyneside and Northumberland fisheries within six nautical miles of the coastline. We achieve this through clear regulation, fair enforcement, evidence-led decision-making, and by working in active partnership with our community.

Regulate

Developing and implementing byelaws

NIFCA has the power to introduce local byelaws to manage activity across the district. These measures, which may regulate gear types, fishing seasons, or catch limits, are designed to ensure long-term stock health.

Every byelaw is developed using robust evidence and public consultation to ensure it is effective and appropriate for our unique district.

Enforce

Ensuring compliance at sea and on shore

Our fisheries officers hold statutory enforcement powers and are highly trained to carry out their duties with professionalism. They may board vessels, inspect gear, and investigate suspected offences to protect the integrity of local fisheries. We believe in a compliance-first approach, prioritising education and guidance to support our fishers, while taking formal action when necessary to safeguard the marine environment.

Protect

Managing for long-term sustainability

Our management decisions are informed by scientific monitoring, environmental assessments, and the invaluable local knowledge of those who know these waters best. We are responsible for managing North Tyneside and Northumberland fisheries within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), ensuring that fishing activities do not compromise vital conservation objectives.

By combining expert regulation with evidence-led management, we help make sure our inshore waters remain productive, protected, and resilient for the future.
