Fisher Forums are local meetings designed to listen to fishers about matters that are important to them, to share knowledge and information about fisheries management and conservation initiatives that are relevant to both fishers and the NIFCA, and overall to support a thriving fishing industry where both people and nature can benefit.
Industry feedback
Our Fisher Forums create an open, collaborative space where fishers can raise issues that matter to them and where we can better understand the challenges currently facing the industry. Recent sessions have explored topics such as the economic impact of rising fuel prices, the proposed increase to the lobster MCRS, and opportunities linked to the Fishing & Coastal Growth Fund and ringfencing for small-scale fishers.
These meetings also give fishers the chance to highlight pressing environmental or operational concerns and to share ideas with one another. They provide an important platform for us to update attendees on local NIFCA workstreams and to discuss national policy developments, including both local and National Fisheries Management Plans. The forums also offer time for fishers to ask questions and receive clarity on these areas.
To make the best use of fishers’ time during Fisher Forum meetings, a representative from the RFG joins us to share updates on MMO workstreams and to take away any questions that fall outside the IFCA’s remit. This ensures that local issues raised by fishers can be fed directly into national conversations, strengthening the link between regional experience and wider fisheries management.
Marine Management Organisation
The Marine Management Organisation’s Regional Fisheries Groups (RFGs) provide a structured way for fishers, regulators and industry representatives to work together on shared priorities. Each group brings local knowledge into national fisheries planning. You can find an overview of the MMO RFG network, including the areas each group covers, on the government website.
Northumberland IFCA is an active member of the North East 4b RFG and usually provides a standing update at each meeting. Notes and papers from the North East 4b group are available online for anyone who wants to follow the discussions or track ongoing work.
